Captain
Ralph van Hoek
Duties: Run the ship safely, smoothly and efficiently.
Education: Maritime Academies
He started out as a deckhand and built up sea time. He took Coast Guard exams
to go from a 100 ton to a 1600 ton mate and eventually to become a captain.
It took him about six years to become a captain and he has been one for 18 years.
He likes meeting the new people on the research cruises. "Scientists used
to have tunnel vision on the research cruises, but nowadays they are more well-rounded
and find many different ways to collect data on the cruises". When he's
at home, he enjoys long rides on his Harley! Eat your hearts out, girls!
