LaVern is third in line to the Captain. She is in charge of the bridge when on duty. She stands watch and is the navigator. Some of her other duties are to watch weather systems as they develop using NAVTEX, SATCOM, and Weather Fax and to get the ship in line for the sub to drop as well as holding the course of the ship while the sub is under.
