Glossary

Blocky – boulders/rocks that have straight, clean edges with little to no erosion, often arranged in a grid-like pattern SEE IMAGE

Crevice – space within or between rocks where organisms frequently hide and/or live SEE IMAGE

Faulting – process by which boulders crack and separate, forming a clean, straight fissure; this can either be filled with sediment or left as open space (crevice) SEE IMAGE

High Relief – descriptive term relative to low relief; reef that is > 2m high SEE IMAGE

Jagged – rocks that have been eroded, resulting in irregular, uneven, rough edges SEE IMAGE

Low Relief – descriptive term relative to high relief; reef that is < 2m high SEE IMAGE

Overhang – when the top edge of the rock forms a ledge over which there is open space for organisms to inhabit; often formed as a result of erosion of the lower portion of the rock SEE IMAGE

Pitting – holes in the surface of the rock formed as a result of erosion SEE IMAGE

Vase Sponge – sponges, often purple and/or white, in the shape of a vase SEE IMAGE

Wire Coral – soft corals that are anchored on the bottom; they are single, slender stalks, usually white in color, and grow upwards in a corkscrew or bent pattern SEE IMAGE
