Name: Amanda Thomas
What is your major? Marine Biology
How did you become interested in this major or field? Research on manatees (books, not field research) got me interested in the field as a child and that has grown into something I would love to pursue long-term.
Where do you see yourself five years from now? Working for the federal government (great benefits) – hopefully in the field. I don’t want to spend a great deal of time in the laboratory. I’ll probably be on the east coast but travel as needed.
What part of the research on this trip has interested you the most? The biological has been very interesting. It coincides more with my major and so that is where my greatest interest lies. I enjoyed washing the sediments and seeing what could be found in them as well.
What part of the research has interested you the least? The phytoplankton. I’m a simple person and the processing of the phytos seemed complicated.
Did you get sea sick on this trip? The first
day when the seas were high I felt nauseous at times, but never actually got
sick. (thank you Saltines and Bonine)!
