Atlantic Deer Cowrie (Cypraea cervus)

SHELL LENGTH: Approximately 6 inches (15.24 cm)

This glossy and domed univalve is rarely seen on beaches. It is identified by a speckled orange-brown color, no spire, and a long, slit-like toothed aperture. These vegetarian grazers grow up to 6 inches and live on hard, rocky ledges and shipwrecks where they hide in crevices, only coming out at night.
