Elegant Dosinia (Dosinia elegans)

SHELL LENGTH: Approximately 3 inches (7.62 cm)

The Elegant Dosinia, also simply called the Disk Shell, is a white, flat, circular shell measuring up to three inches with numerous fine concentric lines. The ligament holding the shell halves together is tough and many disk shells can be found with the two halves still intact. This animal lives in sounds, shallow-water sandflats, and offshore sandy areas. They burrow in sand and extend siphons upward to feed on plankton.
