Giant Eastern Murex (Muricanthus fulvescens)



SHELL LENGTH: Approximately 5 inches (12.7 cm)

Also called the Giant Atlantic Murex, this large, heavy shell can grow up to seven inches. They have six to ten spiny, axial ribs per whorl and raised spiral ridges between the axial ribs. This shell is white outside and has a white aperture as well. These univalves prefer hard, rocky ledges and wrecks and are rarely found on beaches.
