In many 
  areas of the deep ocean (generally less than 2 km) foraminifera dominate the 
  sediments. 
  These single-celled, organisms secrete calcium carbonate from the seawater to 
  construct
  intricate, chambered shells, or tests. Both planktonic (drifting in 
  the water column) and benthic
  (living on the seafloor) varieties exist.
