The 12th Annual conference of the South Carolina Marine Educators Association, "Working Together… Naturally," will be held jointly with the Environmental Education Association of South Carolina on March 30 - April 2, 2000, at the Penn Center on St. Helena Island, near Beaufort, South Carolina. Come join marine and environmental educators from throughout South Carolina as they come together to collaborate and promote awareness and appreciation of the State’s bountiful environmental resources. Rick DeVoe, Executive Director of S.C. Sea Grant Consortium, will speak on the importance of "working together naturally" by enhancing linkages among educational efforts to better understand the challenges we face in marine and coastal environments. Round Table Forums Come and participate in a forum with experts from across the state on topics ranging from sustainable fisheries, ecologically responsible development, and science standards. Before going to the Penn Center, please join us to meet board members, presenters, and new friends and catch up with old ones. Campfire Storytelling After dinner at the Penn Center, join us around a campfire for a relaxing and fun time of story, song and dance with THE SPIRIT OF OLD BEAUFORT’S Steve and Evelene Stevenson and Gullah storyteller Pearly Sue. Time For Talent: "Open Mike Night" Let’s put down our guards and share talents with old and new friends. Steve and Evelene Stevenson will begin with a special ante-bellum musical dance. Bring your guitar or keyboard, sing a song or lip sync, tell jokes, or teach us a line dance. It’s all for fun! Marine Meringue The annual marine-theme swap meet is always a favorite, and this year we will add an environmental twist. Bring interesting items to trade with your colleagues. Typical items include fossils, posters, activities, artwork, or anything else you can think of. Anyone can participate. The more you bring, the more you’ll take home! Cookout/Oyster Roast Enjoy beverages, burgers, hot dogs, and the traditional sides. An oyster roast will be included for all you oyster lovers, so bring your oyster knives and gloves. Stargazing/Night Excursions Enjoy a night walk through the forest or gaze at the stars or planets with Spring Island Naturalists. We will set up a telescope and you’re welcomed to bring your own telescope or binoculars. "Let The Games Begin""Network Fun Come try some innovating ways to learn something new. Compete in the Land/Ocean Olympics, test your wits with Ocean Jeopardy, or just be a spectator. Prizes for the winners! Hat Decorating: Make It - Take It Using our conference’s theme of "Working Together....Naturally", bring a hat to decorate. Bring your own decorations or we’ll supply some. Wear your hat at the Saturday night party. Great prizes for the best hats! SCMEA Annual Auction The biggest fund-raiser of the year and a lot of fun, too! We need each member to contribute items for its success. Books, day-trips, T-shirts, artwork, and travel packages have all been popular in the past. Please bring your donated items to the Conference Registration Desk on Thursday. DJ Party After the auction, plan to dance, socialize and celebrate your new purchases! Exhibits Come learn about the many different educational resources South Carolina has to offer. Introduction to Land Ethics...Using the Writings of Aldo Leopold’s Sand County Almanac (Rick Huffman, ASLA, Landscape Architect) - Aldo Leopold’s writings represent a breath of fresh air into the realm of conservation that can be read and comprehended on any level. The concepts of acquiring a land ethic value should be standard in classrooms and curricula. A walk, a sketch session, learning to read the landscape, and an interpretive writing work session about land values will be included. Participants will receive a book and sketchpad. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $20. Exploring Plate Tectonics 1 (Dr. Leslie Sautter, Associate Professor, Dept. of Geology, College of Charleston) - What is Plate Tectonics and how can you teach it in your classroom? Explore this dynamic and exciting theory with a variety of hands-on exercises using maps, puzzles and models. Play with the new and revised "3-D Plate Puzzle" and begin construction of a giant seafloor spreading model! Suitable for grades 5 to college. Participants will receive a seafloor map and packet of exercises. Pre-registration is required. Limited to 20 participants. No cost. Nature Photography for Educators (Witt Langstaff, Photographer and Instructor) This workshop is for beginner and intermediate photographers who want to learn some basic nature photography techniques that can be used with any type of camera equipment. Topics covered include subject selection, equipment selection, exposure and light variables, field techniques and ethical considerations. Participants will combine classroom presentations and outdoor demonstrations to improve their ability to make pictures an effective part of their presentations and teaching material. Pre-registration is required. Limited to 25 participants. No cost. Field trips require pre-registration. Tickets will be issued for individual trips and are not exchangeable. Please be aware that certain specified field trips require you to make your own reservations. Depending on the location of your Thursday field trip, you may want to go directly to the field trip before checking in. Mini-Field Trips These one- to two-hour trips will focus on a particular topic and will be conducted on or near the Penn Center grounds. They include the following: Introduction to Shorebird Identification (Friday, 6:30 am – 8:30 am) Join Chris Marsh of Spring Island Trust on a trip to Harbor Island. This field trip is for beginners and experienced birders who want to learn more about identification and ecology of migratory shorebirds. Bring binoculars and a bird field guide. Depart from the front of the Hampton House. Limited to 20 participants. Sign up for the field trip at registration. We’re Going In-seine! (Friday, 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm) Come join Ken Alfieri of Cypress Gardens on a trip to Hunting Island and learn how to pull a seine net in the lagoon and on the beachfront. Learn more about the identification and behaviors of the critters you find. Depart from the front of the Hampton House. Limited to 20 participants. Sign up for the field trip at registration. Marsh Safari (Friday, 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm) Join the "Marsh-mellows", Julie Cliff, the 1999 National Marine Teacher of the Year and Ruth Truluck, a High School AP Biology and Adjunct College Instructor on a laid back informative walk in a salt marsh. Learn to identify plants and animals in this important ecological habitat and find out some interesting stories to tell your students. Wear old shoes and insect repellent. Bring zip lock bags. Meet in front of the Frissell Community House. Limited to 20 participants. Sign up for the field trip at registration. Birding (Saturday, 6:30 am – 7:30 am) Join Dr. Julia Krebs of Francis Marion University on a pre-breakfast walk around the Penn Center ‘s grounds and maritime forest. Bring binoculars and insect repellent. Meet in front of the Brick Fellowship Hall. Limited to 20 participants. Sign up for the field trip at registration. Barrier Island Processes (Saturday, 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm) Join Whit McMillan of the South Carolina Aquarium on a trip to the beach on Hunting Island. Discover the shifting sands of the South Carolina coast as we simulate a barrier island. We’ll simulate currents and coastal development in this sandy activity. Depart from the front of the Hampton House. Limited to 20 participants. Sign up for the field trip at registration. Pond Life 101 (Saturday, 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm) Come join instructor Dr. Diane Lauritsen for a trip to a local pond. You can find lots of life to look at with your students in your nearest pond. Learn about sampling, taxonomy, ecology and behavior of pond invertebrates in this easy field trip. We will bring a variety of specimens back for closer study. You are welcome to come by for the lab session even if you can't make it to the field trip. Meet in the conference room at the Hampton House. Limited to 10 participants. Barrier Island Ecology (Thursday, 1:00-3:00p.m.) Join "Ranger Mike" Walker of Nickelodeon’s "Gullah Gullah Island" for an enlightening romp through Hunting Island State Park. Trek to beaches, dunes, maritime forests and a salt marsh to study the ecology and geology of one of our most beautiful State Parks. Bring clothes you can get muddy and bug spray. Binoculars and cameras optional. No cost, but please reserve your place by checking the appropriate box on the Registration Form. ACE Basin Boat Tour (Thursday, 2:00 - 5:00pm) or (Sunday, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.) The ACE Basin is the largest estuarine preserve on the East Coast that still retains its original pristine quality. This preserve is not only rich in wildlife and botanical treasures, it also has a long and fascinating history. Take a 3-hour boat tour on the Dixie Lady, a 38-foot, Coast Guard-certified covered pontoon boat. Captain Stan, Tour Guide and Captain, is a former Coast Guard Captain and shrimper with life-long experience in the ACE Basin. This trip will take you into the scenic and diverse Wimbee & Williman Creeks. Bring your own food and beverages or purchase drinks from the Captain. Cost is $25 per person. Coastal Kayaking (Thursday, 1:00 - 3:30 p.m.) or (Sunday, 10:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) Join The Kayak Farm and "Ranger Mike" Walker for an exhilarating paddle through the lagoons and waterways of Hunting Island State Park. You may be lucky enough to examine such neat invertebrates as sea pansies, hermit crabs, live sand dollars (actually keyhole urchins) and assorted mollusks on this low tide tour. Bottlenose dolphins and osprey are also common occurrences. Wear old shoes you can get wet and bring drinking water and insect repellent. No experience is necessary and all equipment will be provided. Please bring a bag lunch. Cost is $15, limited to 20 participants. Spirit of Old Beaufort Walking Tour (Thursday, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.) Join an enthusiastic guide dressed in ante-bellum attire for a very enjoyable tour through the streets of Old Beaufort. Your guide will use songs (yes, you can sing too!) and wonderful old photographs to illustrate the rich history that is Beaufort. Did you know that the flags of four different countries have flown over this port town? Refreshments will be served. Cost is $8-$10 per person/depending on the number of participants. Waddell Mariculture Center (Thursday, 2:30 - 4:00 p.m.) Tour the South Carolina Department of Natural Resource’s facility on Victoria Bluff (just outside Hilton Head). This 150-acre research facility contains 17 acres of ponds used for the cultivation of shrimp, finfish and bivalves. Participants will visit labs and grow-out facilities at this world-renowned mariculture training center. For you "shopaholics," this site is near the Outlet Parks I & II in Bluffton, SC. No cost. Limited to 20 participants. Pritchards Island Trip (Sunday, 10:00 a.m.-12:30.p.m.) The USC-Beaufort’s Center for Coastal Ecology would like to invite you to Pritchards Island to view the facilities and learn about their loggerhead sea turtle project. The trip will include a short boat ride from Fripp Island to Pritchards, an introduction to the Island’s projects and educational opportunities, a tour of the dormitory, and an ecology walk on the beach. Directions to the dock and a list of what to bring will be provided after registration. This trip is sponsored by the USC-Beaufort Center for Coastal Ecology. No cost. Limited to 20 participants. Spring Island Excursion (Sunday, 10:00 a.m.-12:00p.m.) Tour one of South Carolina’s most beautiful sea islands with Senior Naturalist Bruce Lampright. Visit the Mobley Nature Center, learn about native landscaping, and discover the history of sea island cotton in the shadows of massive tabby ruins (the most extensive in North America). A wildflower walk will also be included. No cost. The registration fee is $120. Visa or Mastercard are accepted. Each conference participant is expected to pay the full registration fee. Questions? The Penn Center has recently renovated the lodging facilities, which are equipped with heating and air, kitchenette, conference room, and a sitting lounge. The dormitory-style houses have two single beds in each room. You may specify your roommate on the registration form or one will be assigned to you. Accommodations are on a first-come, first-serve basis. The cost for lodging for the total conference (Thursday-Sunday morning) is $80. If you prefer not to stay at the Penn Center you MUST make your own reservations at the only motel on St. Helena Island, the Royal Frogmore Inn at (843) 838-5400. Your must confirm your reservation with the Royal Frogmore Inn by March 1st. Indicate that you are a SCMEA/EEASC conference attendee. To Beaufort From Columbia: Take I-26 East toward Charleston. Take Exit 169 onto I-95 South toward Savannah. See I-95 South bound directions below. From I-95 South bound: Take Exit 33 to Highway 17 North (toward Beaufort). Follow 17 North to Gardens Corner where you will bear to the right on to Highway 21 South. USC-Beaufort will be on your left. From Charleston Airport: Take Highway 526 South (Mark Clark Expressway) toward Savannah. At the Hwy 17 junction, take a right (south) toward Savannah. Stay on Hwy 17 until you reach Gardens Corner (just past Yemassee). Turn left onto Hwy 21 South toward Beaufort. Follow Hwy 21 into Beaufort. USC-Beaufort will be on your left. To the Penn Center on St. Helena Island: Follow Hwy 21 through downtown Beaufort and over the Wood’s Memorial Bridge until you get to Frogmore on St. Helena Island. At the Frogmore intersection there will be a sign to the Penn Center. Take a right on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and go about a half a mile.
