SCMEA Conference
Spring 2005

By: Sue Morrison

Get ready to learn, to have fun, and to recharge your "salt water batteries!" This year's SCMEA Conference will be held from April 8-10 at Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort. The beautiful Litchfield/Pawley's Island area offers many historic and natural attractions such as Huntington Beach State Park, Brookgreen Gardens, and museums and provides the perfect backdrop for this year's theme, "An Art-Sea Affair". We are busy planning an exciting and informative weekend in which our usual science theme is intertwined with the use of art to explore, explain, and express ocean science concepts. It should be an interesting adventure into the world of science and art.

Our weekend activities are designed to provide opportunities to learn (workshops, keynote speakers, sessions), to participate (field trips, auctions, Marine Meringue) and to have fun (meals, dance, auction) and to meet new people who share your passion for marine science. We want you to leave with your head full of ideas, information, strategies and insights that you can pass on to others. Be thinking of ideas or activities that you could share with others either in a session or through Marine Meringue.

Litchfield is a beautiful resort on Highway 17 and it provides ample meeting and dining space, several restaurants, a pool, and golf facilities. All hotel rooms are 2-room suites with a separate bedroom with 2 double beds, a living room with sofa, TV, etc. and a small kitchenette area with microwave and refrigerator. You can check out Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort at http://www.litchfieldbeach.com

Scholarships are available to attend SCMEA Conference so be sure to check the SCMEA website for updates on deadlines for these scholarships. Set aside the weekend of April 8-10 and get ready to get "recharged" with new ideas and the wonders of the sea.
